The original Super Dimension Fortress Macross anime TV series, directed by Shoji Kawamori and produced by Studio Nue, was first aired in Japan. It started the popular space opera franchise combining mecha, music, and romance.
The movie version of Super Dimension Fortress Macross, a condensed version of the TV series with new animation and changed story elements, was released in theaters in Japan.
The original Macross series was adapted and merged with other series to create the 'Robotech' series for the international (mainly American) audience, introducing Macross to a wider global audience under a different name.

Season 1 was one of my favorite anime binges in a long time. Such a fun mix of thoughtfulness (movement through time), silliness, and cool scenes (The Ruins of The King's Tomb). I can't wait to watch season 2. I know it's airing as I write this, but I like taking in entire seasons at once if I can manage it.
