A Trip to the Moon, released in 1902, is considered one of the first science fiction films and famously features a spaceship hitting the Man in the Moon in the eye, a scene inspired by the Jules Verne novel From the Earth to the Moon.
The film was directed by Georges Méliès, who was also a magician, and he used innovative special effects techniques to create the movie's fantastical visuals, including stop-motion photography and multiple exposures.
