Benedict Cumberbatch, who voiced Smaug, not only provided the voice for the dragon but also performed in a motion capture suit to act out Smaug’s movements, embodying the character's physicality as well as his voice.
The barrels used in the escape scene were crafted with custom-built handles inside to help the actors stay secure and perform more realistic movements.
