Mixed Martial Arts Fun Facts

An obscure piece of MMA history: Japan’s Pancrase (founded in 1993) used hybrid rules that differed from modern MMA — closed-fist strikes to the head were illegal (fighters used open-hand palm strikes instead), and there was a “rope escape” rule where grabbing the ropes to break a submission cost the escaper a point while giving the attacker an advantage. Pancrase helped shape early MMA and produced stars like Bas Rutten and Ken Shamrock.

An early U.S. ancestor of modern MMA was CV Productions’ “Tough Guy” competitions in Pennsylvania (starting in 1979), featuring fighters from different disciplines—years before the UFC. The events were shut down after a widely publicized death, and in 1983 Pennsylvania passed the so-called “Tough Guy Law” banning the contests, making them a forgotten prehistory of American MMA.
